Have you ever gone into an event not knowing what the hell to expect? For me it was Pop Up Magazine. I recieved free tickets for this event via twitter, and I knew I needed to attend. One of my favorite food writers was giving away the tickets, so I HAD to be there. A quick glance at their website confused me even further — what the hell is a live magazine anyway? Since they want you to experience the live magazine, they don’t post any audio or video online, which naturally fueled my insane mind and convinced me I was going to a scientology lecture.
I grabbed Kyle, and we hopped in an uber to get downtown. We can SEE Downtown LA from our Hollywood apartment, but it managed to take us over thirty minutes to get to the Ace Hotel, a whopping THREE MILES AWAY. Gotta love Los Angeles. When we arrived at the Historic theater at the Ace, we were both blown away. If you’ve never been into the theater, you need to get there ASAP. There’s ornate detaling everywhere, and the sheer gaudiness of the entire theater is a marvel in and of itself.
The show is truly amazing, and I’m so glad I went. I laughed, I cried (three whole times) and managed to drink 5 vodka sprites in a two hour show. It was pure brilliance. I won’t divulge too much, because it’s something you really need to experience for yourself. After the show, the people that read stick around and chat and drink and just genuinely mingle and it is fantastic. If you get the chance to catch popup magazine, you need to get tickets and go.
